We all loved Doug. Mercy people are like family. We all met a couple of weeks ago and were remembering the good time we had
with him at work. He left us with many memories. Every Christmas he would take group pictures of everyone in the office and make copies and give them out to all of us. He was a great sole and will always be fondly remembered.

Doug and I became friends after the death of his mother, Carol Neff. Carol was one of my best friends, one of a group of seven women who worked together at a company called Robert E. Lamb, Inc., in Valley Forge. Carol and I did many things together, some of them joyously outrageous, which was not my usual way of doing things, but Carol had a way of inviting me to join her that was irresistible. She would call me ... breathless ... saying, "Jeanne, you MUST read this new book or see this Masterpiece Theatre or learn this new skill in a local craft shop." She said she was never going to retire because there would be nothing for her to do, but then she did retire, and she was so busy you could never find her.
It is not usual for someone to become friends with the son of a friend, but that's what happened. Doug and I were very close friends and shared many a confidence that neither of us would have shared with anyone else. He and I lived near each other in Jeffersonville when he got Frankie, his BELOVED pug. In warm summer evenings, I would drive my convertible through Doug's neighborhood, where I would find Doug and Frankie walking. Often, Frankie jumped into my front seat and the 3 of us would take a little drive. Doug and I spoke often about the horrendous loss he suffered when Frankie died, and how he didn't know it was possible to love a pet so much.
I believe that Doug inherited Carol's love of trying new activities, always wanting to see what was on the other side of the mountain. He loved singing and performing so very much, and was so hopeful that the drug trial was going to give him "some more time." To think how that time was "stolen" from him makes me sad beyond belief. If there were just a few words I would say to Doug today, they would be: "You're a good man, Charlie Brown." I miss you terribly. Rest in peace, my friend.

Doug was my NextDoor neighbor. Although I didn't get a chance to know him very well, I knew he was kind, friendly, and gentle man. And, a good neighbor. I will miss him. But, his flower garden that I created for him two years ago lives on...Rest in peace, Doug.

Doug and Karen were friends since college days. Doug was a true Renaissance man. He had so many interests and tried so many things- and did them well. He painted, he acted, he traveled. He loved his family and is very proud of them. He was always a great person to be around. He made you feel important to him. He was a great listener. He told great stories. He was a kind and compassionate man and people responded to that. I miss, miss, miss him.

Doug was one of the kindest people I know. I loved running into him or working with him on shows, and will dearly miss seeing him. The world has lost a bright light.

I came to know Doug, through Karen who was my partners admin at Wyeth. They were both wonderful people, both taken from us way too soon. Doug’s caring nature and personality shined in his love of the theatre and whenever he spoke of his grandson and family. He was devoted to his family. He will be truly missed by many I am certain. I’m sorry I cannot be part of the celebration on Friday, but please know I am there in spirit. Rest peacefully my friend, Karen is waiting for you with her to do list I’m sure.

Doug Smith was with Mercy Health System for almost 40 years. He was a well respected Vice President who achieved (and over came) many problems within his department of more than 80 employees. When Doug made the decision to retire, Mercy lost a very important member of their team. Doug was a wonderful, wonderful fearless leader for all of us at Mercy.

Doug was on the stage crew of the first show I did at the Barn. We became friends immediately and I've never known anyone quite like him. We performed in many shows together, and saw each other frequently outside of the theater. We had so much in common, we spoke and texted often, about more subjects than I can list here. I will miss my dear, dear friend and confidant. He touched not only my life, but the lives of so very many people. His passing leaves a void in my heart. Rest in peace, "Charlie." xoxo

8/10/20 Doug was a dear friend to me and could always make me laugh. He was the kind of friend you may not see often, but you could pick right back up like no time had passed. Doug had a sense of humor that could light up the room and a hearty laugh I’ll never forget. A loving father, a caring friend, a devoted son and husband, Doug was so many things to so many of us. I have so many memories that make me smile.
He was so accepting of everyone and anyone.
Love, and strength to the family. I will remember and pray for you all in the difficult days that lie ahead.
