The "Bonger" was a classic. My first intro to the Bonger was at the Heart Break Hotel. He was "on fire"! From then on it was a "rix" or a "raw" as we became friends. Many a time the Bing Cha (another alias) would be my ride to Pardoe or Barkeyville in the beast.
He came back to see us a couple of times in 70' after graduation and we partied like it was 1999.
The final crossing of paths took place at Floater's memorial in Asheville, NC in 2015 and I got to say, the Bonger looked great.
So sorry to hear of his passing and I really loved the guy! He was a classic.

John T. Long, Jr. was a true mainstay of the Grove City College Beta Sigma Brotherhood. He had the ability to command a room like Jonathan Winters or Robin Williams. Brothers and Sisters would gather around and be spellbound for as long as "The Bonger" carried his story, with everyone laughing like idiots. The "Bad-Ass Rabbit" has transitioned from Camden, NJ to romp and ream in the Celestial Leas of Heaven. Saint Peter has no idea of what is coming. Rest in Peace, John T. Long, Jr. You have been and will continue to be dearly loved. Thank you for all the wonderful memories and terrific e-mails. Godspeed!

So sorry to hear of John's passing. I knew John from our years at Penn Charter School. What a great sense of humor he had coupled with that smile and of course that voice that carried throughout a classroom and sometimes out into the hallway! We weren't in touch after Penn Charter but I can only imagine the fine teacher that he became. My condolences to John's family and many friends.

Mr. Long was one of my favorite teachers from my years at Sandy Run Middle School. I had him in Sixth grade. I can still remember him teaching us about the viscosity of liquids and the reports we did on them! I never forgot it. He always was fun with the kids and had a perfect personality for teaching. I feel he was an important influence towards me getting my teaching degree and becoming a teacher myself. I continue to be inspired to always make learning fun for kids and knew that he had our full attention for learning in doing so himself. He will be sadly missed. He had a special gift. Thinking of all those whose lives were touched by him. He was a great man. Prayers to your family. ~Christy Cavanaugh Grossi

I knew John mainly through encounters on the court or the course (and sometimes afterward). He was very competitive! But, I got a different view of John one Christmas Day morning. I was visiting my mother-in-law at Abington Hospital when John and Marilyn came in to her room. They were making the rounds at the hospital to cheer up the patients separated from their loved ones. Many would be alone on that busy morning. John and Marilyn were so cheerful and upbeat it was infectious. My mother-in-law was so impressed I was proud to say John was a friend. John brought that undeniable energy to everything he did. That energy will be missed but remembered by those that knew him.

I met John in 1960 as a ninth grader at Penn Charter. We became best friends and spent many days and nights together, sometimes doing things left unsaid. I'll never forget getting fries at the Hot Shoppes and Longy flinging the bottle of catsup to get it to the top of the bottle, except the top wasn't screwed on. Catsup shot 4 booths away. What an arm! Needless to say we were ESCORTED OUT. Many Saturdays were spent at Vargo Dragway in Perkasie watching the Funny Cars and Gassers run. As 17 and 18 year olds, fast cars and drag racing was in our blood. The Vietnam War split us up in 1966 with me going in the Air Force and John continuing at Grove City College. It never dampened our friendship. Upon returning I spent 2 years at Drexel where I met my wife Susan and she joined in Longy and my circle of friends. Even though we moved to L.B.I. in '73, the Longman and I continued our friendship. We would get together every summer for lunch and catch up and reminisce over the old times. I truly loved Johnny, his personality was larger than life and something I admired greatly. As others have said, when Longy was in the room, everyone knew he was there. So many fond memories, I feel like crying when I think of them. We were like brothers growing up. I miss you brother, you were taken too soon. May you Rest in Eternal Peace.

I knew John Tees Long Jr. for almost 62 years. We first met in Mr. Askews 7th grade homeroom at Penn Charter. Our seats were in a circle and we ended up next to each other. We became close friends very quickly. He spent so many weekends at my house that our neighbors thought my parents had adopted him! A thousand memories from the Poconos to the Jersey shore;sports of all sorts we competed in, with, and against each other.Victory was sweet in either situation. He was very competitive!
Over the recent past we discussed many of these events and the ever growing period of time we had been friends. That was always a fun conversation! We were only 4 months apart in age and both had recently also discussed how the old joints after all those sports, were starting to become problematic. That was not a good conversation.
Regardless the chat,John was always as honest as the day is long when we talked. He used to be incredibly honest with both his parents when we discussed life. He said things to "The Chief" and Gladys when we were in our teens which I would not of told my parents! They would always just say,"Oh Johnny", and enjoy his extreme honesty!
I am still in shock about Johnny! I can only say rest in peace my friend. We will speak again.

John, or Longy, or Tinman as I liked to call him (a reference to his titanium hip), was a bigger than life personality. His voice, even his "indoor" voice, was distinctive and booming. You always knew where he was in the building or even on the golf course. We worked together for decades and I can assure you he was one of the great constants. He was always there for his students by being prepared and by being willing to advocate for them. He was not only well liked, he was well respected.
Tinman and I played many an inning of softball, sets of tennis and rounds of golf (not to mention all of the different meals that go with those activities). I believe he and I agreed that breakfast was the most important meal of the day.
Many of us have always said that if and when we ever wrote our memoirs, dedicating a chapter to John Long would be a must. He was that type of person with that type of impact. He will live on forever in our minds and hearts.

For 17+ years, I cooked omelettes at the June Fete on Friday nights. To my left, John was the “captain” of the beer tent. His gregarious personality and booming voice was one of the many perks of working at the Fete. I will miss him dearly.
